The Adorers

VIKTOR

He took the corner too sharply, which jostled Callista in the passenger seat. Viktor couldn’t get away from the Emporium fast enough. Keeping it together was getting harder.

When he sensed Callista outside Mystics he thought the end had come. Scattering traces of his energy elsewhere had shaken her from his trail in the past. But by the looks of her, Viktor didn’t need to worry about her calling out his secret bond with Anastasia just yet. She was too distracted suffering from a bad case of expired patience.

Callista tipped her chin down, her jaw quivering as she clawed at the fringe of her multicolored scarf. Shadows peeked out from all angles of her silhouette. Each breath was quicker than the last. The Adorers must be more spent than she’d mentioned earlier on campus. He should have known.

“Are you following me now?”

“I told you,” Callista said. “I missed you.”

“Lucky me.”

“You were on my inner radar and then you disappeared. What are you up to?”

“Searching for the cause of all the restlessness in The Realm,” he said.

“Hah, the only restlessness is me, and you’d better get on it before Caspian pays you a visit,” she scoffed with the vain confidence Viktor expected; but he knew better. Caspian was always in control and one step ahead of her. “It took me forever to find you.”

As they traveled through an intersection, she leaned over the console, her fingernail digging a thin trench up his forearm. Viktor blinked, pushing Anastasia’s link down deeper inside him.

His ring clanked against the gear shift knob. He gripped it tighter and swerved past a slow-moving car. Red droplets oozed down his wrist. Knowing that blood was a rich source of life energy, Callista dragged her finger along his skin to collect the blood. She licked it off.

“What are you doing out without your driver?”

“I don’t need a babysitter, Viktor.”

“You ditched him?”

“Stop sounding like my brother. Pull onto the next side street and take your second left.”

His tires crushed loose gravel as he veered the car onto Industrial Drive and into a vacant parking lot. Crows cawed in protest, but dispersed, blending into the twilight sky. He drove his car behind what looked like an abandoned warehouse.

Before Viktor had the chance to turn off the engine, Callista was at his door, yanking it open. One hand wrapped his bicep, the other on the roof, practically rocking the car. She was edgier than he’d ever seen her.

He pocketed his keys and ducked out of the car. His door latched behind him. The sound echoed across the empty lot.

Light from a stationary lamppost illuminated four petite figures emerging from behind a dumpster nearer the backend of the property. Their postures weren’t as straight as usual, their auras flickering faintly.

“Go to them,” Callista said, pacing a few feet from him. “Make them strong.”

Viktor thumbed the belt loops of his jeans and turned from Callista, fully aware of the simmering volcano inside her, anxious for an excuse to blow. Caspian asked him to keep her calm.
